Writing your way out of a writing block is not an oxymoron. It isn’t a cruel joke. Writing is the best way to get out of a writing slump… but how?? 😭
Here come the writing prompts!
Though I’ve seen lots of valid advice telling me not to abandon my novel, sometimes we just need a break.
Here’s how writing prompts– completely unrelated to your WIP– can help you beat the slump.
…Remind You That Writing is Fun!
Novel-writing is fun, but sometimes we can take it a little too seriously. This is especially true at the 2nd draft and editing stages of the process. In short, we suck all the fun out of writing with work– work that needs to be done.
Writing prompts allow us to break the rules. Write whatever. Make it crazy. Who cares if it sucks, it’s just a prompt!
This mentality gives your inner creative child permission to play. It takes you from the work mentality to the artist mentality– which may be exactly what you need to keep writing! Lure back your muse with a bit of fun 😉
…Give Your Brain a Rest
Have you ever tried to figure something out, and you just couldn’t? Then you slept on it and BOOM! You figured it out in the morning, or in the shower. That can happen in writing, too.
When you’re hellbent on writing the perfect scene, or meeting your word count, you’re stressing your brain out. Chill.
Give your brain some breathing room by setting the problem aside for a bit. Give it a playful prompt and go back to the problem later. This will also help you…
…Refresh Your Point of View
I know you’ve found some old story your wrote, read it, and thought “Hey, that wasn’t half bad. Why did I ever stop writing it?” Probably because you were working so hard you got sick of it 😂
Setting your work aside for a bit can refresh your point of view. Go play with some prompts, then come back with fresh eyes.
But can’t you do all this without writing prompts? Yes, but…
Prompts will keep your writing routine on schedule, because we all know how hard it is to get back into a healthy habit that has been broken.
Speaking of which, I’m going to do some writing prompts now!
